A hidden neon-hued coral reef lies a few yards off of the hyper-drive tourism + nightlife Mecca that is Miami Beach. For a seaside city at multiple inflection points of crime, over-tourism, and the increasingly daily realities of climate change, the reef represents a beacon of hope. Two young LGBTQ socialites, Patrick Breshike and David Grieser, along with a coalition of scientists, ecologists, and local boosters are bent on turning it into a marine park — possibly the closest one ever to a populous oceanfront vacation destination. Standing in the way of preserving it are a multibillion dollar hotel lobby, an art curator’s vanity project, and hordes of jet skis and boat anchors. Will this surreal ecological adventure succeed?
